All too often we pass through our city our minds on getting to work, going to the grocery or picking up our children or grandchildren that we fail to see the beauty that surrounds us. As you pass through downtown Dyersburg, slow down, let your mind relax and take a look at some of the historic buildings that grace our square. You might be surprised at what you have been missing. Check often as these images will be updated.
A number of these buildings were built before the turn of the twentieth century and have served and continue to serve our city. Think back when you were younger and relish the memories created by these old structures. For me, the building that housed Woolworth’s 5 and 10 cents store, where Galleria is now located, stirs childhood memories. The smell issuing from the long candy counter that greeted me upon entering the building becomes as real today as it was in the 1940’s. The large ceiling fans continue to swirl and cool as they did then. The counters filled with Christmas decorations and toys from a simpler era flash through my mind. As I am carried back in time a peacefulness permeates my being. Time slows down. Today’s heavy schedule becomes less demanding. Try it, you’ll like it. These photos are only a few of the ones we will feature in weeks to come. |
