Train Fire in Dyersburg

DYERSBURG, TN - My visit to the Dyersburg Fire Department this afternoon proved to be more exciting than I had anticipated.  I had gone there to speak with John Doyle, fire inspector, about some information we needed on the fire department.  We had just entered his office when the alarm sounded.  John asked if I wanted to go.  There was no way I would miss it.  I served on the Finley Fire Department for a number of years.  It is something that gets in your blood.  I miss it.  Jean was the first lady firefighter with the Finley Fire Department.

As we headed down East Court the smoke was visible.  When we turned north on Kist Avenue it was evident that the fire involved a train car on top of the Kist underpass.  I did not have my camera with me so John loaned me his.  I started taking pictures while he suited up.  The train car was loaded with plastic for PolyOne Manufacturing in Dyersburg.

It was mostly a straight up climb for the first firemen on the scene.  Scurrying to the top of the overpass is a little difficult for the firemen with turnouts and air packs on.  Once they reached the scene the fire was extinguished in a short period of time.

I would like to thank John Doyle for allowing me to go with him.  The men of the Dyersburg Fire Department are some of the nicest, friendliest people one could ever hope to meet.  Dyersburg should take pride in the fact we have one of the most well trained fire departments for a city of our size anywhere in the state.
